Well said -- Holiday version

It's Beginning to Look a lot like ... Holiday written by Red Cardigan at And Sometimes Tea brings it back into perspective.

Like one of those commenting on her post, I remember when Christmas displays went up after Thanksgiving and the sales began in mid-December. Now ornaments and cards seem to pop up in the stores at the same time as the red, white, and blue decorations for the Fourth of July. A few short days ago Santa inflatables were sharing space in front of the grocery store with Frankenstein and Dracula. There's just something Wrong. With. That. Picture -- not to mention the inflatable ghosts hovering near the inflatable nativity scene snow globe.

The children are even picking up on it -- I am being asked to play some of the Christmas CDs in the van. That isn't happening before Thanksgiving, thankyouverymuch.

I'll leave you with some more well said words on the topic:

Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store.
"Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!"

My brother works for a retail store and he said they put it out because people buy it. It's business, you see...

Great post, Cath. I couldn't agree more. We have a radio station that plays only Christmas music during "the Christmas season." And they start around Halloween!!! I refused to let the kids put it on. And OF COURSE they stop at the end of Christmas Day!! Right when you WANT to hear the Christmas music for at least another twelve days!!! (I will post the recipes!)

Ah, Entropy, that is a problem. The question now is how do we fix that problem? It almost seems pointless to say don't buy any of it that early because (one) the prices are going to be so great and (two) we have developed a "better get it now because there won't be any left when I want to buy it closer to Christmas" mentality.

Who is in the mood to buy decorations in July and October though?

Rosemary, I agree. I thought it was funny last year when I heard a DJ (on the 26th) say she was sad because the Christmas music was over.

And that lends itself to a whole 'nother post -- this massive push to hype Christmas so early and to such a frenzy that there is such an emotional and mental crash the morning after.

Entropy and Rosemary, I hope you both are able to enjoy Advent and the build up to Christmas without the frenzy. I'm going to try to.
